Seven Questions to Ask Before Pursuing Agency Ownership

Prepare for a useful district conversation with questions about licensing, capital, compensation, milestones, staffing, training, and the day-to-day responsibility of building an agency.

A useful first conversation makes the opportunity clearer and gives you a realistic next step. Bring these questions with you.

1. Which pathway fits my experience?

Discuss what you have done, what you want to learn, and how each opportunity begins.

2. Which licenses do I need, and when?

Ask about Property & Casualty licensing, Life & Health licensing, and how those requirements connect to appointment and production milestones.

3. What capital requirements apply?

Ask what must be demonstrated, when it is reviewed, and whether any qualifying reductions or waivers apply to your pathway.

4. How does compensation work?

Distinguish employment compensation from commissions and performance-based incentives. Ask about eligibility, timing, and expenses.

5. What milestones must I meet?

Clarify the measures, timeframe, and consequences of not meeting requirements. A pathway is easier to assess when the expectations are specific.

6. What training and support can I access?

Discuss University of Farmers training, available district resources, and who can answer questions as you progress.

7. What will operating an agency require?

Ask about the office, staffing, daily work, and business responsibilities of ownership.
